Columbia University scientists reported the development of devices that derive directly from evaporation. The device is created to where it generates electricity causing a light to flash, and a rotary engine that drives a miniature car. Scientists suggest that one day it will have the ability to produce electricity from a giant floating power generators that sit on bays or reservoirs. According to Ozgur Sahin, Ph.D., an associate professor of biological sciences and physics at Columbia University, "Evaporation is a fundamental force of nature". There are spores in the device that transform the tapes in the device to tug or extend it, which will release a force resulting in a new type of artificial muscle that is controlled by changing humidity.
Shashank Priya led a team of mechanical and materials engineers and chemists at Virginia Tech University. What they have produced is a flexible solar panel that can be inserted into window shades or wallpaper, which will capture light from the sun and from sources inside the building itself. Most silicon panels can only absorb sunlight, unlike flexible panels which can absorb diffused light. The panels can also be constructed into different variations, which gives it an advantage over silicon based panels. The different sources of light that the panels can absorb are LED, incandescent, and fluorescent fixtures.
With the sun being one of the most cleanest and reliable energy sources available when it can be used, researchers at Paul Scherrer Institute, PSI have created a chemical process of using the sun's thermal energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into high-energy fuels. The sun's energy has already been stored or captured in different ways such as photovoltaic cells and solar thermal installations. This new process is now an addition to this list.
The production: The chemical process was influenced by the principle of the thermo-chemical cycle, which comprises the cyclical process of chemical conversion and thermal energy required. The reaction of converting water and carbon dioxide into energy fuels is made by the substance subjected to temperatures above 1500 degrees Celsius causing the substance to lose oxygen atoms. Water (H2O) is converted into hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon monoxide (CO). The result of the substances are specifically used as gaseous or fluid hydrocarbons such as methane, petrol and diesel. A new invention of a disposable battery that folds like an origami star has been able to power biosensors and other small devices for use in challenging field conditions. There are microbial fuel cells that run on the bacteria that is provided in only a few drops of dirty water. There is an inlet in the battery that appears when it is unfolded and requires drops of dirty water to power the fuel cells to work. The story of creating this is stated by Seokheun Choi, "Commercially available batteries are too wasteful and expensive for the field"
According to the inventors of a new creation of a flameless gas stove, it is more efficient and cleaner. There is a video on the webpage that explains the process.
A new invention of a wind turbine has been created which has the potential to become something more. By that I mean a it can be improved to increase power coefficient by 8 percent. The turbine is a vertical axis Savonius wind turbine, which was studied and created at University of Vaasa. Due to it's size and it for being a VAWT, it is a good solution for wind power generation in cities.
Metal powders are made of clean primary energy sources. Due to the fact that these powders have the potential to fuel a car is quite interesting, considering scientists are making prototypes. I honestly don't mind the idea of using the metal powder as they are meant to be made up of not only clean primary energy sources, but also recycled iron substances.
First off, when I saw this title I wasn't too surprised. Researchers theorized that in about 15 years, the United States' energy will be mostly from the weather. Renewable resource potential, energy demand, emissions of carbon dioxide and the costs of expanding and operating electricity generation and transmission systems will meet future standards for electricity. I do know that more recently technology is being powered by wind. The fact of knowing that doesn't make me surprised about this article. I am also curious to see the standards of electricity by 2030.
I thought that this article was interesting because scientists and researchers are trying to find out how to replace the battery device in the electric cars. the problem that has been occurring is that battery cells are becoming defective. Which means that the vehicle stops working and the battery needs to be replaced. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in Stuttgart have now created an alternative. Each battery cell has its own microcontroller that records relevant physical parameters, such as the temperature and the state of charge of the cell. With this process, the cell knows what condition it is in. The cells communicate with each other and can also communicate with other devices throughout the car.
